Knock 3 Times to Save a Life

With the weather turning colder, outside cats seek warm, sheltered areas wherever they can. It is not uncommon for a cat to crawl under the hood of a parked car to enjoy the warmth of the engine compartment. Unfortunately, cats that seek shelter under the hoods of cars can be injured or even killed when the car is started.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), a pet’s cold tolerance varies from pet to pet based on their coat, body fat, activity level, and health. Some pets can tolerate the cold weather better than others. The AVMA shares some tips to keep pets safe during cold weather.

• Make some noise – a warm vehicle engine can be an ideal heat source for outdoor and feral cats, but it’s deadly. Before starting the engine, check underneath the car, bang on the hood, and honk the horn.

• Prevent poisoning – clean up any antifreeze spills quickly, even small amounts can be deadly.

• Provide shelter – make sure outside animals have unlimited access to fresh water. Provide shelters with a floor that should be off the ground, with thick, dry bedding.

• Feed well – outdoor pets require more calories in the colder months to generate enough body heat and energy to stay warm.

• Allow time for the cat to escape the car. They can tuck themselves into the tightest of spaces.

Remember the song by Tony Orlando back in the 1970’s called “Knock Three Times?” He was clearly singing about cats who find refuge under car hoods. Before starting the engine in the morning, knock three times on the car hood. Save a life.
